Thursday 1 June, 2023LivAssured BV, the manufacturer of a leading epilepsy detection device NightWatch announces the results of a pioneering scientific study demonstrating the device's effectiveness and reliability in detecting major motor seizures during sleep in children at home.
If your child has a major seizure in their sleep, as a parent you want to be there for safety and support. Epileptic seizures while sleeping can lead to unsafe situations, including the risk of SUDEP (Sudden Unexpected Death in Epilepsy). But how to wake up in time?
In a first-of-its-kind research project, 53 Dutch children with epilepsy were monitored in their family home setting before and during the use of NightWatch. NightWatch is a wearable medical device that alerts caregivers if it detects potentially hazardous motor seizures during sleep.
The trial was conducted through a nationwide collaboration between researchers and neurologists from SEIN, Kempenhaeghe, UMC Maastricht, and UMC Utrecht. NightWatch detected 492 of a total of 552 major motor seizures that occurred during the trial and showed a median patient detection sensitivity of 100%. Moreover, within just two months of using NightWatch, caregivers reported a substantial decrease in their stress levels. Another critical previously reported finding was a significant reduction in healthcare costs following the implementation of NightWatch into these families’ daily routines.
Dr Roland Thijs, neurologist, and principal investigator of the study, highlights the critical need for reliable seizure detection: "Most nocturnal epileptic seizures go unnoticed, while such seizures could lead to potentially hazardous situations. This study underlines the important role a reliable detection system like NightWatch can play in providing safety and support for families affected by epilepsy."
"These findings underscore our commitment to delivering reliable and effective solutions for those affected by epilepsy", said Jeroen van den Hout, CEO of LivAssured BV. "We are dedicated to making seizure detection accessible to everyone and we are optimistic that these results will pave the way for broader acceptance and coverage of NightWatch through health insurance."
