What do New Year Honours really mean?

The New year is upon us and as is tradition there is a New Year Honours list. There are many honours and awards given each year, but they tend to divide people. There are those who say the system is rigged and many who are given an award may not deserve it. Others ignore the famous recipients and instead concentrate on the people they believe genuinely deserve to be recognised for their work and achievements.
