States to offer a transgender studies certificate.

Today newswatch 12's alicia rubin spoke with one of the people behind the new curriculum.

Alicia says: "around 1.4 million us adults identify as transgender that's according to ucla williams institute so use says this new program will be focused on transgender studies" kylan says: "so we know there is an increasing number of people that are trans and that means that people that are in organizations and healthcare and corporations are going to need to address those individuals as employees or as customers or as clients" the certification is 28 credits or 7 classes that look at a range of topics from transgender history and literature to the affects of trans lives within different industires in the u.s. kylan says: "we're also having one called decolonizing transgender which is from an indigenous perspective and top by a native americans study faculty so we're really trying to bring in different components and thoughts and ideas about what trans means" dr. de vries estimates it would take about 2 years to complete the certification but their hope for the new program goes beyond traditional students.

Kylan says: "our hope is people can get the certificate or just take some classes and then express to their employers that they have maybe not an expertise but at least some knowledge" dr. de vries says sou is also hoping this unique opportunity will bring in students that might not have considered sou otherwise.
