A bill that would recognize 911 operators as first responders is making its way into Indiana.

For children, and was declared brain dead on wednesday.

Indiana law makers are working on a bill... that would "designate" 9-1-1 operators as "first responders."

News 10's jordan kudisch reached out to the vigo county dispatch center.

She joins us in the newsroom... to explain how the bill would provide more benefits for operators.

When you need them..

They're there.

But who makes sure you're helping in an emergency?

Dispatch.

And according to operators here in the valley..

The new law would give them that recognition.

In indiana..

Operators are classified as "secretaries."

The "bill" becoming "law"..

Would not only provide "recognizition... but also..

Introduce new "opportunities" for these operators.

That includes..

Higher "pay" and "more" benefits.

It would also "encourage" people to stay on board longer.

According to the 9-1-1 director... it's a "demanding" job..

And there's a "high" turnover rate.

She's hopeful that this would help provide more reassurance for full time employees.

"good calls and bad calls... but that comes with the job and to finally be recognized as being the professionals that we are, is a big step in the right direction for us.

" if all goes well..

This bill will go into effect july 1st.
