Some learning centers in Starkville are implementing a virtual learning plans to help working parents and preparing children for the year ahead.

It's called the summer slide.

And this summer, parents and educators are concerned about the amount of time students have been out of the classroom.

Most students have not been in a classroom since mid-march.

But as wcbi's bobby martinez reports, some learning centers like the one in starkville are helping working parents and preparing children for the year ahead.

Lending a helping hand to working parents.

That is the mission at ms. smiths educational services here in starkville.

They want parents to not stress about their child's education while at work.

Because here, they are working countless hours to make sure each child doesn't fall behind.

"it is very important that they remain educated because we often say they are going to take over for us one day."

This classroom is where young students are working to catch up and even get ahead for the coming school year.

Many parents are back on the job.

And, families are making decisions now about how their children will best learn - in a classroom or in a virtual setting.

"we do have a village mentality.

That it takes more than just one to raise children and to make sure that they are learning what they can learn, be effective adults, be great adults and great human beings period."

"i do get a chance to go to the schools and see how kids are doing and talk to teachers.

We have a very good relationship with teachers and principals and they also call and say you know i know you have this student this is what we're working on can you do more this."

Co director tonya davis says students work on reading, writing and math..

"we've been able to bring in guest speakers, we've been able to have them go skating and so even though it's been different it's definitely still been a summer of learning and with fun activities."

Volunteers have also stepped in to help.

Kylan baggett - volunteer i really enjoy helping them with their work.

Some of these kids have the opportunity to be great and i just want to show them that they'll be great one day.
