For the american dream --- but many tri- state veterans --- are without the very bases of that notion -- a place of their own.

That's why one local couple is doing all they can to make sure no vet is left behind.

44news reporter megan diventi explains.

"it's here in this building behind me where one henderson couple is on a mission to help our tri-state heroes."

-hero outreach service providers "we've got some heroes."

For rodney bond of henderson-- his days now consist of giving back from the new veterans cafe--- located right inside the all peddlers flea market-- "all my life i have wanted to help veterans and just over the years there are not that many people who were helping them and i said i have to do something..then i came here to henderson and found out we have over 650 homeless veterans on the streets and i said no that's impossible...that should be illegal."

Bond and his wife spend hours every day of the week making nearly 2 dozen home-cooked meals---which they deliver to local veteran shelters... "have you ever walked up to a homeless veteran and handed them a plate of food?

The look you get just makes you want to cry."

The ingredients for the meals are paid for out of pocket---which has been slightly costly..... to help even more---the couple just recently opening a veterans cafe---"if they don't want to donate to me come down to eat something because everything we make in here, every penny we make on food goes to feeding the homeless..we use the money we make in here to turn it back and buy food and feed the guys in the shelter."

But for bond--he says helping the men and women--- hits home for him-- "i've been homeless--i spent a year at a homeless shelter in tulsa, oh back in the seventies when i first got back from nam nobody would give me a job....and this cop took me a shelter called john 3:16 mission and that's what changed my life."

Now--he's hoping to help change someone elses--- and hoping the community can help back him up when it comes to helping others... "i'm a veteran and my whole world is wrapped around veterans and homeless veterans and there is a special place in my heart for them and i was hoping there was a special place in others peoples hearts ya know."

"if you're interested in helping out the program you can find more information on website at wevv.com.
