Mississippi wont see the worst of hurricane laura, there is a risk of tornadoes.

I spoke with the parks and recreation director who tells me the doors to storm shelters here in aberdeen are always open.

"anybody you can get in is welcome we wont turn anybody down."

With the possibility of tornadoes in our area thursday and friday, parks and recreation director michelle stewart says storm shelters in aberdeen are an option to stay safe.

"it's not like you have to call and get them unlocked or anything like that they're always open."

There are at least five shelters in aberdeen located in different parks.

Tornadoes ripped through monroe county just last year and killed one person, injured many others, and trapped some people in their homes.

((nats)) "about 10 to 15 people can fit inside this storm shelter."

But for people worried about the ability to social distance the parks and recreation department in aberdeen also has a shelter.

Another problem north mississippi residents may need to be mindful of is flooding.

I spoke with the mayor here in aberdeen about what the city is doing to try and prevent flooding as much as possible.
