Professor explains how money and policing impact particular communities

Is coming up./// we've all seen the protesters taking to the streets, calling for an end to police brutality, discrimination and inequality.

A professor at macalester college is exploring how education... race... policing and economics form a system that disadvantages particular communities.

Kimt news 3's isabella basco joins us live with a look at the professor's case.

Isabella?

Xxx katie and george... (shows graphic) a crystal comes into shape because of multiple points on it.

And that's how professor brian lozenski likens structural inequalities.... specifically in our education system.

Xxx if not now... when?

That's the title professor brian lozenski chose for his sweeping presentation.

"normal has produced chaos, and part of our understanding of equity is what has led to the chaos?

What has led to the disruption?"

Topic number one of the presentation: income inequality.

"the more money your parents make, we can predict with great accuracy ?

*- how well you will do among those metrics."

He concludes standardized tests add to the disparities.

"we know that standardized tests are more highly correlated to parental income than they are to college success."

Lozenski believes the imbalances are also found in school policing and discipline.

"we've got people as young as kindergarten being put in handcuffs for things like subordination, for things like a fist fight in the hallways."

He says criminalization of students is creating a distrust of law enforcement.

"if a student refuses to leave the classroom ?

"* that starts o get looked at as criminal?

"*lie behavior and more and more we're seeing officers intervene and things like that as opposed to working with teachers."

Lozenski wants to help minnesotans understand the depths of structural racism ?

"* and alternative the discussion tonight was hosted by the rochester?

"* olmsted youth commission in partnership with the rochester community education citizens council.

Live in rochester ib kimt news 3./// thanks isabella.
