WCBI New at Six - 10/1/2020
Deadline to register to vote is almost here.
We'll show you how ahead on wcbi.
The mississippi highway patrol is looking for state troopers.
We talk with a sgt.
From troop f who says it's a lot more than just writing tickets.
We'll have that story coming up on wcbi news.
Show open monitor intro the deadline to register to vote for the 2020 presidential election is right around the corner.
October 5th is the final day.
Wcbi's stephen pimpo joins us live in the studio with more on how the process works.
We always hear about the importance of registering to vote... being new to mississippi, myself, i was curious how to start the process.
And i learned at the chickasaw county circuit clerk's office that the steps to register take just a few minutes.
Pkg "your vote is your voice.
If you don't have a vote, you don't have a voice."
Having that voice that comes with the right to vote, which is one of the most fundamental core rights of an american citizen.
Amidst the ongoing political turmoil of 2020...more people, like those in chickasaw county, are making sure their voices are heard this election.
"yes voter registration has picked up.
We've had a good number of people come in to register to vote and change their addresses."
This year...mississippian s have the responsibility of voting in the upcoming presidential election, while making their voice heard on a new state flag design and medical marijuana.
"i'm not for sure if it's just presidential or they're just interested in politics these days."
While it may sound daunting...register ing to vote in mississippi is quite simple.
To register in person...you visit...any state or federal agency offering government services...such as the chickasaw county circuit clerk's office at the courthouse.
All you need to bring is either a mississippi drivers license or your social security number.
Then you just fill out one of these forms. "you're full name, you're physical address, you're mailing address, your drivers license number, or you could provide your last four digits of your social."
And that's it.
Once you complete the form, the clerk's office will mail you a voter registration card.
Houston resident jaden johns did waste any time in registering to vote...coming to the clerk's office on his 18th birthday.
"wanted to try and do this as quick as i could so i could be sure to vote whenever the election comes around."
Ben easley came in to update his registration information and to submit an absentee ballot since he is a tag you also have the option of mailing that information to your circuit clerk's office.
To qualify for the presidential election...those forms need to be post marked by october 5th.
You can find a link to mail-in voter registration form on wcbi.com keep your masks on.
Governor tate reeves may have lifted the mandatory mask mandate in some places, but many cities still have their own restrictions.
Elected leaders in starkville, west point, tupelo, aberdeen and columbus want people to continue to wear masks in public spaces, including stores and restaurants.
The governor is still requiring masks at all schools and what he calls close contact businesses like salons and barber shops to prevent the spread of covid19.
Local leaders are stressing personal responsibility when it comes to keeping covid numbers from spiking again.
A lot of businesses in the city of columbus have a notice posted on the door that before entering, you need to wear a mask.
And i would say to any business, if you have a customer who refuses to wear a mask, you don't have to get into any kind of confrontation with the customer.
All you have to do is call the columbus police department to take care of the issue.
Mayor smith says columbus is continuing the mask mandate to protect all residents.
And, the mayor says the mandate will stay in place until further notice.
Mississippi's covid- 19 cases go up, while hospital numbers continue to go down.

Intro the mississippi highway patrol is trying to boost the number of troopers.
A recruitment drive is underway as applications are being taken for the 2021 trooper class.
Wcbi's allie martin has more from a local man who answered the call more than a decade ago.
The mississippi highway patrol is looking for people with strong moral character who want to protect, serve and make a difference.
A sergeant in troop f says it is a fulfilling career that involves a lot more than traffic stops and ticket writing.
Nats sergeant gary stanton spent part of his thursday morning with fellow troopers at new albany's hillcrest baptist church.
The officers were visiting with teachers and students at the church's day school.
"just to see all these smiling children, and the look on their faces when we turn on the blue lights and sit down and speak to them."
Sergeant stanton enjoys talking to students of all ages about his career as a state trooper.
The 35 year old potts camp native answered the call to become a state trooper when he was 22 years old.
An uncle encouraged him to apply .
"i got in at a very young age, it's been one of the greatest blessings of my life, gotten to see parts of the state and meet people i've never knew existed."
Trooper says the training is tough, expectations high and opportunities for advancement unlimited.
"we have a swat team that services the entire state of mississippi, we have a special operations group, those guys are able to provide riot control presence, they go into prisons sometimes when things are out of order, we have a motorcycle unit, have an mbi division, providing an investigation presence."
In recent years, there has been a shortage of troopers across the state.
Sergeant stanton says the highway patrol is looking for those who have what it takes.
"three of the things someone should possess, a strong moral compass, be physically fit and be willing to serve, so if someone possesses those three qualities and interested in a career in law enforcement, they should ask themselves now, should they apply to the highway patrol?"
October 31st is the deadline for mhp trooper applications.

éé 3rd graders at caledonia elementary school are participating in csi week.
éé math, science, social studies, and reading skills are all vital components to lead students to clues.
éé teachers say putting a cool twist on their assignments increases engaged learning.
éé and it's one way to get students thinking outside the box.
éé " the main thing is keeping that love of learning and keeping that excitement for them.
Obviously we want them to master of skill that they're working on but it's also a big experience because kids learn through experience so something else simple as coming to the science lab and doing something like that you know what they're probably going to learn those skills better than they would if we were necessarily in the classroom."
Students will continue csi week tomorrow.
