Protesters in southern India's Mangalore set fire to an image of the prime minister and an effigy of the minister of home affairs on Thursday (October 1), angry at the official response to the death and "forcible cremation" of the Hathras city gang-rape victim.
Footage shows a vigil being held for the victim and protesters with banners and placards as an effigy of the home affairs minister Amit Shah is set alight to the sound of chanting.
Protesters also stamp on the effigy and place an image of Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the fire.
The gang-rape victim was severely injured and passed away on September 29 in a New Delhi hospital after fighting for her life for two weeks.
The body of the victim, who was from a lower caste, is said to have been cremated by authorities without seeking permission from the family prior, which has sparked outrage across the country.
