Coronavirus 10.jpg fayette county is closing in on nine thousand cases of the coronavirus since the start of the pandemic.

Coronavir ... the lexington- fayette county health department says there were 150 new cases over the weekend.

That brings the total number of cases overall to 8,880.

There were no new deaths reported... leaving the total at 79.

The health department says just over 77- hundred people have recovered from the virus.

Over the weekend... the university of kentucky police and lexington police began patrols in neighborhoods around the u-k campus.... all in an effort to try and stop the spread of the coronavirus.

They were looking for any large student gatherings or parties.

According to the lexington-fayette county health department... u-k students made up almost 50-percent of covid-19 cases in the county last month... which was a record month for cases in the county.

The university says patrols are to help keep students... and they community... safe.

"i think the mass majority of our students are doing the right things, all the time, for the right reasons.

They understand that these measures, while a challenge, while an inconvience at times, are how they help keep themselves safe and as importantly, keep their colleges, their friends, and their loved ones safe as well and so that vast majority of students are doing that."

The patrols are expected to continue throughout the fall semester.
