Hundreds of students clashed with police at a protest in West Papua on Friday against Indonesia's new Job Creation Law.

Hundreds of students clashed with police at a protest in West Papua on Friday against Indonesia's new Job Creation Law.

The demonstration in Sorong City on 9 October was one of many across the country against the new law, which the government says will streamline Indonesia's complex web of regulations.

Critics say it goes too far in loosening labour and environmental protections.

Initially the student demonstration was peaceful, with the head of the city police asking protesters to comply with health protocols.

But clashes broke out when demonstrators tried to push through the police barricade.

Some protesters then tried to attack the police by throwing stones and water bottles.

The police responded with tear gas, water cannon and warning shots.
