Residents in Baripada, in the state of Odisha, have pleaded to the local government to take care of a tree that is said to be four centuries old.

The historic banyan tree, which stands inside Maharaja Krushna Chandra High school, has around 500 sub-trunks and 1,000 aerial roots.

Some of these branches had to be cut due to the widening of roads and wind damage.

The tree has stood tall in the middle of the town for centuries.

This footage was filmed on September 15.
