According according to the "national coalition against domestic violence"...nearly 10 million people are abused by their partner every year.

One "local" organization has been helping those who suffer from domestic abuse since 19-85.

News 10's bri shackelford lets us know who they are...and how they can help.

[take pkg outcue: back to you duration:1:37] pk} october is national domestic violence awareness month.

One group here in terre haute helps survivors who are in a situation of abuse.

Coda is the "council on domestic abuse.."

The organization offers many services, like legal advocacy..

Shelter..

And a crisis line.

But...executive director emily murray says the most important thing they offer survivors is a chance to rest.

"you know they don't have to come in and start working or doing anything.

They just rest, because abuse creates such trauma, it creates trauma, and when you're trying to heal from tramua you need to just rest."

The organization gives survivors a chance to heal.

They bridge surviors with the necessary tools they need.

"if they need to get on food stamps, or they need help finding a job, or finding housing, we're here to help them.

If they need mental health services or physical health services, we make a lot of refferals."

Murray says coda is very near and dear to her heart.

She tells me she first got involved by being a volunteer..

"i've always been really drawn to helping people.

I've always had a servants heart ever since i can remeber, and so being able to help people that are in really ypugh, dark, situations has really appealed to me."
