The mississippi state department of health reports totals for two days of covid-19 numbers.

There are 586 new cases in the state and zero deaths.

These numbers are from saturday and sunday.

Over those two days, lee county saw highest amount of new cases with 59.

Monroe had 26.

Itawamba and union counties have 20 new cases each.

Oktibbeha has 14.

609 people are hospitalized with confirmed or suspected coronavirus symptoms. 140 of those patients is in icu.

Intro we've been closely following the latest rise in coronavirus cases.

Today, governor tate reeves announcing a new set of restrictions with the goal of slowing the spread.

Statewide--hospita ls will now be required to reserve at least 10 percent capacity for covid patients.

They're filling up again and this time it's not just because of covid patients.

The other piece is a mask mandate and social gathering limits.

But as courtney ann jackson explains, those restrictions aren't for everyone.

"in mississippi, we've seen this movie before.

We know what can happen if we allow this to get out of control.

So, we want to be proactive to prevent that from happening."

It's the same approach used earlier this year- add restrictions only on those counties with the most rapid spread.

A look at this graph shows that once 23 of the counties were under such mandates-the numbers did start to take a downward dip.

And took the most dramatic and prolonged drop after the statewide mandate was in place "simply having local governments or state government or the federal government or any other big government tell people what to do, i understand that just writing something on a sheet of paper does not guarantee that it's going to slow the spread of the virus."

Some folks we spoke with say- they don't trust the personal responsibility model.

"i was very disappointed when it expired because everything was still going up.

You know, i don't see no changes."

"it's very disheartening.

I'm trying to see where people are really missing the mark at."

While others say- "it should be a person's choice if they want to wear a mask."

But the case numbers have been going up.

Dr. dobbs says... "we have universally available testing and if we have university available contact tracing and we're still growing, we need that third piece right now right now.

Especially until we get a vaccine.

We need that non- pharmaceutical intervention piece which is going to be the distance thing, the masking in the small groups."

The counties with the fastest spread of the virus will go back under a mask mandate on wednesday that will last till november 11th.

They'll also have to limit social gatherings indoors to 10 people outdoors to 50.

The owner of an aberdeen printing company says covid 19 has taught him to be flexible in his business plan.

John allmond is the owner of allmond printing.

He was the guest speaker at the weekly meeting of the aberdeen rotary club.

Allmond explained how his company began making face shields for mema this spring, as covid 19 was spreading, and healthcare workers did not have enough personal protective equipment.

At the same time, allmond's sign making business was slowing drastically.

After helping mema get a stockpile of the face shields, allmond printing began making sneeze shields for schools and daycares, and even face shields for babies at day care centers.

Allmond says his company has re invested profits from the p-p-e back into the business.

"so that in the future we would be able to sustain, catch up from losses we normally would have occurred, from covid and set to go forward in the future."

Allmond printing has purchased two pieces of equipment, and is also expanding its building.

Monday night: aside from a few clouds, skies will remain mostly clear tonight with lows near 60.

Tuesday-thursday: we'll remain mostly sunny and tupelo police are looking for the people who fired as many as 30 to 40 shots sunday night.

It happened in haven acres around 10:30 p.m.

Investigators say the shooting happening in the area of beasley drive.

No injuries have been reported.

Columbus police are investigating a shooting that left two people injured.

It happened over the weekend and police believe could be tied to an underage party.

Police chief fred shelton says the shooting happened on brown street friday night.

Two juveniles had non life- threatening injuries in the gunfire.

Shelton says officers believe the argument started at a nearby house party.

The victims were released from the hospital.

However, investigators tell wcbi those teens are not cooperating with the investigation.

Police have not made any arrests.

The prentiss county sheriff's departments is trying to identify three suspects involved in a burglary last week.

These are images captured of the suspects during the burglary on county road 3101.

It happened october 15th.

Centered a starkville man is accused of holding up two people outside an apartment complex.

26-year-old johnathan hagens is charged with two counts of armed robbery and possession of a concealed weapon.

Oktibbeha county deputies were called to 21 apartments on saturday night about the alleged robbery.

Investigators say hagens had a gun when he went up to two people at the complex.

No injuries were reported.

Hagens remains in jail.

Wcbi stinger community members in tupelo are tackling the topic of race by talking about it.

They came together at the "unity town hall summit" at tupelo's st paul united methodist church this evening.

The event featured pastors and other community leaders from across the region.

Audience members could ask questions about race and other issues that have polarized the nation recently.

"you want to understand where the other person is coming from and get a better view of why they think the way they do and give them a better view of why you think the way you do, like i do, and then walk away, with concept knowing, this person thinks this way, i think this way yet we can still be friends."

"we can come together, ask some hard questions, and be able to speak without being judged and help each other to understand each other better."

Pastor parks said dialogue among people with different views and backgrounds should happen on a regular basis, and not just during election cycles.

The number of mississippians wanting to vote absentee continues to grow.

In fact, the numbers are already higher than the 2016 general election totals.

Secretary of state michael watson's office reports more than 120-thousand absentee ballots have been requested in the state.

So far, 89 thousand 499 have been received for the general election.

In 2016, more than 110-thousand absentee ballots were requested.

The deadline for in- person absentee voting is october 31st.

The mississippi lottery continues to pay off for drivers across the state.

Eight point two million dollars went to the mississippi state treasury in september.

That money is from net proceeds from the games.

The mississippi lottery corporation made the announcement today.

So far, 26 point five million dollars have been brought in from the lottery.

The money is earmarked for road projects throughout the state.

Net proceeds up to 80 million will go to the state highway fund.

The funds will go to the state's education system once profits are above 80 million.

People who live on gillespie street in starkville say their quiet neighborhood looks and sounds more like a major thoroughfare these days.

A group of neighbors took their concerns to the starkville board of aldermen, saying traffic has increased on their street since medians have been installed along highway 12.

They say to avoid the medians and other traffic control devices, drivers are are turning onto gillespie street as an alternative.

A spokesman for the group says the increased traffic has brought noise and speeding drivers.

City engineer edward kemp told the board the goal is to maintain efficiency and protect neighborhoods.

The mississippi state fair will continue for another weekend.

State agriculture and commerce commissioner andy gibson made the announcement this morning.

He says hurricane delta impacted the first weekend of the fair.

The fair will now be open thursday through sunday.

Organizers have been operating under special guidelines due to covid-19.

Saturday-sunday: we're expecting a cold front to move through friday night that will help to clear much of the rain out before the weekend.

However, an isolated shower can't be ruled out, especially on saturday.

Generally, the weekend will be pretty nice with just a few clouds and highs in the 70s.

Morning lows will be back into the 50s.
