Christy Bollinger interviews Governor Andy Beshear regarding the recent surge in coronavirus cases.

Governor beshear is calling this surge the most concerning yet and certainly worse than when the virus first hit kentucky.

But, the state is already benefitting from lessons learned as abc 36's christy bollinger found out when she talked to the governor.

"the positive is that we know more."

The governor says the state's been preparing for this surge since the pandemic hit.

He says that's one of the reasons kentucky has more resritrictions than neighboring states.

"we are going to take the steps in kentucky to prioritize our health and safety while also keeping our economy safe and open and i'm not gonna apoligize for taking stronger steps than other states."

He says ther another shutdown but knows will be an economic impact, especially with no more federal relief money coming anytime soon.

"it is hugely dissapointing that in the midsts of a one in every 100 year pandemic congress can't even sit around the table and hammer out help to our families."

Beshear says federal money is needed by the end of the year to keep up testing and stop outbreaks in nursing homes.

There's no way for us to shut-off the most vulnerable and everybody do whatever they want.

We're living for other people right now."

So is the cumberland valley district health department...which expected the surge to come.

Public health director christie"we have set a task for ourselves to push harder for compliance from businesses."

Public health director christie green expects things to get worse before they get better.

"i believe the best thing i can do as a public health director is to continute to prepare as if these cases are going to continue to escalate."
