Hungry families in our indiana and kentucky counties are getting an extra helping hand -- to the tune of nearly 200- thousand dollars in grant money for free food.

44news reporter marisa patwa is in evansville with more.

Five hundred thousand is the number of free meals anthem blue cross and blue shield is pledging to provide to 15,000 tri-state households over the next three years with the money specifically targeting low income neighborhoods -- like jacobsville in evansville "you can't be healthy if you're worried about your housing or where you are going to get your next meal."

And tri-state food bank executive director glenn roberts says the 195 from anthem is critical - as there is a huge problem with access and distribution of food and the one hundred and the funds will double their efforts to help feed hungry mouths, especially with the holidays coming up.

"we would do maybe one dozen a year.

You know like one a month -- and with anthem's support, and we're getting support from other organizations and grants, we're going to be doing more 130, 120 of these mobile food distribution over a year so it's really accelerating and exploding -- as it should."

As for those kiwanis club members who volunteer in jacobsville regularly donation is already making a big impact.

"i know how short food supplies can be, and you know to me, just being able to get fresh food into a home, so that those kids have things to eat, the parents do, that means so much, we just want to serve those people and we love doing it."

The tri-state food bank is asking for donations and volunteers.
