November 12th.
Happening now..
The group "say their names alabama" is in albertville protesting for the removal of the confederate monument and flag in front of the marshall county courthouse.
Waay-31s alexis scott spoke with the organizer about their plans moving forward alexis?
This is week 7 of protests here at the marshall county courthouse in albertville..
And the organizer of the group say their names alabama told me they believe this monument can come down without the city having to pay a state finefor its removal.
Unique dunstom told me even though we've yet to hear word on when or if the monument and flag will come down... she has a plan to keep pushing for the removal.
Unique dunston, say their names alabama "we're just going to keep pushing our demands which is number one, take the rebel flag down and number two, is to apply for a waiver application from montgomery.
That's the first step for the monument to be removed so right now we're not moving, we're not wavering.
We'll just keep having our voices heard until it's done," this monunment was built in 1996... meaning it's only 24 years old...and the alabama memorial preservation act says local governments have to get permission from the state before moving historic sturctures if they've been around for more than 40 years... if not... they could face a 25-thousand dollar fine... so technically..
They could move it without having to pay a dime, the protesters say.
Reporting live in labertville, alexis scott waay-31 news city council members say right now... they need time to think about this decision before saying anything.
They didn't give us a clear timetable of
WAAY 31's Sydney Martin was at Maple Hill Cemetery with exactly how the monument got to its new home.
