I'm actually here inside of a room in the inn shoals intake center and that meeting between city leaders, nonprofit leaders, and the community is actually taking place right now.

And they're trying to figure out what.

Under normal circumstances, room in the inn operates with churches but because some churches are still even closed to their congregations, they can't operate and while a church might be ready to serve and house the homeless one day, in a matter of hours things can change with covid-19.

So with churches not being able to help this year, room in the inn shoals founder krista manchester went to plan b.

Have the homeless stay at the intake center with volunteers from their program in various churches come feed and stay with the homeless on an alternating basis.

But the city of florence said that can't happen.

>> there was some zoning issues with this location.

And that you know, we wouldn't be zoned to keep people overnight here.

At this location.

So it leaves us without a space, without anywhere for people to go on freezing nights.

>> reporter: now, manchester told me she's hopeful that at tonight's meeting people will come up with new and creative ideas to help the homeless and to control the spread -- community spread of the coronavirus.

They serve about 100 people at a hotel with a hot meal in the area.

The nonprofit moved from a church to its own location after the city shut it down.
