Thursday marked the most new covid cases reported in a single day in the u-s since the pandemic began.

Dr. jeffrey gold/"we can spend a lot of time lamenting what may have caused that, whether it's change in weather, back to school, high school and college sports, whether it's pandemic fatigue, but whatever it is, we need to continue to deal with it."

Among the new cases -- clemson quarterback trevor lawrence -- the heisman hopeful -- helped lead the movement to get college football players back on the field -- lawrence said this on tuesday.

Trevor lawrence, clemson quarterback/from tuesday/"we know that at some point in the year it's more likely than not that that's going to happen to somebody on our team - just how this virus is and how fast it spreads."

On thursday -- lawrence tweeted -- "i have tested positive for covid-19 and my symptoms have been relatively mild -- while i'm following the protocol from clemson and the acc.

The only thing that hurts is missing an opportunity to be with my teammates this weekend and play the game i love."

Deaths from the virus are still high and the centers for disease control and prevention forecast the death toll from covid-19 could reach as high as 256,000 just before thanksgiving.
