From the moment students step off the bus the typical school day now revolves around keeping a virus from spreading.

Every student must be pre-screened before setting foot in the building, and the process isn't any different for teachers, staff, and even visitors.

None sot: kirk tupaj there aren't many visitors here at the utica academy of science charter school, but everyone has to complete a screening process, and have their temperature checked before entering the school.

Genevieve campanella is the dean of academics here.

She explains how each student is given options for how they attend school.

Other students are full- time online, and we actually have our students with disabilities and english language learners coming to school 4 days a week.

Wednesdays are entirely virtual so the building can be given a deep clean.

Nat sot: seven very good teachers like shannon ferguson spend most of their time giving live in- person instruction, but do have some pre-recorded lessons for virtual learners.

Sot: shannon ferguson, kindergarten teacher it helps having those recorded video's so the students in school and online are both getting the same exact lesson, and we also do live zooms twice a day with those students which benefits them and helps them if they need any extra help they get to interact with their teachers and their peers as well.

The maintenance staff cleans areas throughout the school every day once students have left the room.

It's a lot of logistics, but once you kind of work through those, you are able to follow them.

Sot: kirk tupaj the school which opened in mid-september hasn't had any cases of covid, and attributes that success to following the strict guidelines set forth by the center for disease control.
