### to call this season a gut punch emotionally for kentucky football would be an understatement.
All season long a different player each game has worn the number 22 to honor chris oats..
Who had a medical emergency back in the spring.
Now..
Over the past two games they've worn another number..
65.
John schlarman's number when he played left guard for the cats.
Schlarman's two- year battle with cancer came to an end this weak.
L3: solid blue report white vanderbilt @ kentucky kroger field the emotion of that loss was on full display on the very first play.
There you see a hole at that left guard spot.
Uk..
Taking a delay of game to honor schlarman..
While landon came onto the field wearing number 65.
As for the game itself..
The offense certainly came out inspired..
Terry wilson to justin riggs on the opening drive of the game.
Gives the cats a 7-0 lead.
Later..
Wilson..
Running passed commodore defenders..
And into the endzone..
That would make it 14-0.
Vandy kept this one interesting..
But that uk offense was scoring whenever it wanted..
Chris rodriguez..
Wearing number 22 today..
Takes it 74 yards to the house..
That would make it 38-21.
L3 score: solid blue report white logos vanderbiltcutout.png vanderbilt 35 ukathleticblue.png ... vandy would tack on two garbage time td's.
Kentucky goes on to win..
38-35.

Lifelong cats' fan....and sports podcast co- host...jason hazelrigg says it was tough watching u-k play saturday without offensive line coach john schlarman.
Jason: "seeing him as a fan, you know - being on the sideline, going to practice after chemo therapy.
It's just - wow."
That's why schlarman's death thursday...after a two year battle with cancer...was hard for hazelrigg to process.
Schlarman's last game coaching for the cats was the win at tennesee october 17-th.
Jason: "you knew he was tough, and when you know someone like that you just don't want to believe that."
Solid blue fan denny rice feels the same.
Denny: "you hope that was something that was going to be temporary and he was going to be back on the sidelines to make his contrbutrions like he always did."
Rice...a former football coach himself...says he knows it takes more than on-field nstruction to be someone players look up to.
Denny: "i think it's important that we put our best foot forward - that we're positive, encouraging, and that we're teaching not only football, but life lessons as well."
Something he says schlarman clearly lived up to.
Denny: "you can see the tributes that are out there - how they rallied around him.
It's a devastating loss for the university."
Hazelrigg says saturday's win was significant because it's in line with schlarman's mantra...just keep going.
Jason: "go big blue and just keep pushing forward."
Denny: "go big blue."
