CUSD to discuss possible change in learning model

The Chico Unified School District will meet Wednesday night, among the topics on the agenda are how to move forward after Butte County landed back in the purple tier.

What does the coronavirus surge mean for our schools... that recently welcomed students back to campus?

Action news now reporter kristian lopez is live at shasta elementary school.

Kristian you spoke with the chico unified superintendent today.

Does*sh* think they'll shut schools down again?

She says its possible - but its up to the school board - and they could decide that tonight.

Cusd schools have been holding in person classes for about a month now.

Chico unified superintendent kelly staley says the move back to the purple tier caught off guard.

Tonight board members could make an important decision when it comes to the safety of our local students and teachers.

"because this is a discussion action item, the board at that point could make several different decisions, they could decide that because we are in purple we need to move back to online only model, they could decide that because we are already open and the governor's executive order allows us to remain open, that we could continue in the am/pm model, what i would not expect is see us move toward any sort of further opening.

Staley says at one point they were discussing the possibility of reopening schools completely with safety modifications& but now that does not seem likely.

The board's decision will only impact the period of time between now and the end of the semester on december 18th.

On december 9th they will make a decision on the following semester.

She says if there is a change in the learning model - it would not be effective immediately but instead after thanksgiving break to give parents time to prepare.

The school board meeting will be live streamed tonight at 6.
