Eating healthy and getting exercise has been made more difficult for many during the pandemic, as many worry that snacking and other unhealthy habits have lead to weight gain.

Break with thanksgiving on the horizion you're probably prepared for a few extra calories.

But as kezi 9 news anchor chris lueneburg shows us-- this year weight gain is already on many people's minds... what doctors say-- in today's healthy living... sponsored by oregon medical group.

"the basics of healthy eating should sound familiar to pretty much anyone.

Less junk food, more fruits and veggies.

It sounds simple, but for some staying home during the pandemic has them reaching for the pantry more and more often."

Oregon medical group family physician dr. gary brandt says weight gain is on everybody's mind.

"patients frequently start my visit by apologizing for gaining a few pounds."

He says the data still isn't in on weight gain trends during the pandemic-- but his patients have a guess.

"just about everybody feels they've gained weight."

Amidst so much change-- it's easy to imagine why.

"i think it's just a change of routine nobody anticipated or asked for.

It's really impacted the ability for many people to dl what they know is right-- eat better and exercise more.

They just can't make it a part of their routine."

Sometimes practicing restraint is easier said than done... so dr. brandt says the best defence is removing temptation.

"really, it should be fruits and vegetables and healthy choices.

I think it's hard when they are there.

It's very difficult.

So i generally tell people the best to improve your diet is to not purchase the the things you known you shouldn't eat."

Nobody can be blamed if they splurge on their thanksgiving feast... but bringing your diet back to basics can help you avoid worrying about your waistline.

"the other element here is of course, exercise.

During this two week freeze, gyms are closed, but dr. brandt says that outdoor exercise is still possible, even during rainy weather.
