A pandemic, along with a long and dark winter approaching is causing local organizations to make strides in ensuring those in need are not forgotten.

During this time.

News 18's marvin bills joins us with more information on warming stations this winter.

Good morning, what can you tell us?

Good morning, marlee.

News 18 previously reported that both lthc and lafayette urban ministry locked down its warming centers due to covid-19.

Lthc and lum's warming centers are also shelters however many people using the warming centers weren't necessarily using the shelter.

To help facilitate that there are temporary day services currently in planning.

The tippecanoe county health department placed those shelters on quarantine until today due to cases of covid-19 which in doing so closed the warming centers.

In response to the health department's measure, both lum and lthc partnered to create a temporary day center in lafayette under the coordination of united way of greater lafayette.

The organizations are calling the day shelter the lthc lum shelter annex and it requires people to check in at lthc or lum for a referral to that temporary day shelter.

Services normally provided by day will be provided at the annex.

That includes giving guest 2 hours during the day to get a meal, use the bathroom, charge phones and warm up.

Executive director for lum wes tillett tells me all organizations involved are expected to have a meeting this afternoon.

He says the groups will evaluate and create a plan for warming stations this season and the proposed annex.

Of course we'll report the updated information.
