Local medical professionals: Don't let misinformation surrounding pandemic keep you from getting a f

Local medical professionals say it's not too late for parents to get a flu shot for themselves or kids and they are urging people to do so.

To get their kids a flu shot this winter.

News 18's marvin bills spoke to a doctor about this and he joins us in the studio this morning.

Good morning, marvin why are doctors speaking out now?

Good morning, marlee.

Pediatrician dr. timothy snyder with franciscan health says it's not too late for kids to get a flu shot.

He says it is a part of staying vigilant as we approach a long and dark winter but especially during covid-19.

Dr. snyder says during his 30 + years in the medical field he has never observed as many anti-vaccine parents than now.

He believes people are more skeptical of the flu vaccine in part due to the misinformation that has surrounded the pandemic and covid-19 but parents shouldn't be blind sided by everything going on.

He says as parents try to keep their kids safe while dodging covid-19, a flu vaccine is one way they can ensure their kids are safe from the flu.

"there are more people now that are into holistic medicine and alternative remedies and, you know, to each its own but we've been using these vaccines for many, many years and we believe they are safe."

Dr. snyder says between 2019 and early 2020 there were 188 deaths among children 18 and under from infulenza b.

He says doctors vaccinate as late as april.

Franciscan health physician network west lafayette is administering flu shots for children ages six months to 18 years old this saturday from 10 a.m.

To 2 p.m.
