Its a longtime tradition held in west point ..and its what the community looks forward to during the holiday season.
"you never know how many people love a christmas parade until you cancel it."
Lisa klutts-director of community development lisa klutts is the director of community development and she said organizers canceled some activities like the parade, caroling and serving hot chocolate.
But one thing the pandemic couldnt stop children hanging hand-made ornaments on the tree.
"we weren't able to have 5 or 600 kids come as a class to put their ornament on the tree so we invited the community and anybody to decorate the tree."
A nice crowd of people attended the tree lighting and some even brought their own ornaments to hang right before 6 o clock.
"we can socially distance here in the park, they can sit in their cars just to see the lights come on it's exciting."
And after kicking off the holiday season with this most cherished tradition..klutts said the community is still pushing through the pandemic.
"even though we had to cancel a couple of things and rearrange some things, we're still going to make the best of this situation."
