The Red Cross is giving tips to help make sure your holiday plans don't go up in smoke.

Colder weather sets in... wt-v-a's bronson woodruff got to speak with the american red cross about how people can keep their homes safe this christmas.

Grist is executive director of the american red cross of north mississippi.

She said this year the fire rates have increased as the weather got colder.

She says they are still normal compared to other years.

She explained heaters can commonly cause fires.

"everyone doesn't have access to a safe way to heat their home."

In addition, she said candles need to be blown out before leaving the house or before going to bed at night.

Grist added people need to keep space heaters and any other type of heater away from other things which might catch fire.

Above all, she explained communication can save lives.

"making sure there's two ways out of your house that your family has talked about, and that you have a plan."
