The legislative concept would help both renters and landlords

New tonight at 11-- with the eviction moratorium ending in less than a month..

The state legislature is still debating on a bill that would extend that.

Thank you for joining us, i'm chynna greene.

Kezi nine news reporter connor mccarthy spoke with state senator james manning this evening to see where lawmakers are at.

Chynna-- with the threat of eviction right around the corner for many oregonains again-- lawamkers in salem are trying to hammer out a deal.

Senator james manning says he and his colleagues are trying to find out a way to help both tenants and landlords.

Techinically this proposal is a legislative concept and is being written in the state house.

But senator manning says there is talks of extending the eviction moratorium through the end of june but also proividing assitance to land lords.

He says land lords could get up to 80 percent of rent that's due from the state--but the issue is the state budget is running thin.

Senator manning says hopefully with a new congress--they can pass a bill to provide more funding to states to support a program like this.

Imagine having a young family out in the cold.

That's not humane, that's not who we are, we can't have that.

I will do everything in my power that the moratorium is extended senator manning also says he will make sure landlords will be getting the help they need too.

I did reach out to the author of the bill--reprsentative julie fahey-- but she was unable to do an interview this evening with me.

Chynna-- now there are two options for the eviction moratorium could extend.

One--the governor could call a special session before the end of the year so lawmakers could pass this bill.

The second is the governor could extend her exectuive order until state lawmakers return to a regular session in january.

So far senator manning says he hasn't hear any murmurs from the governors office about her calling a special session.
