Dr. thomas dobbs referenced in a tweet that 9.8 percent of covid cases end up in the hospital.

With the high case numbers each day---they know that will mean even more patients coming into already full hospitals.??

Courtney ann jackson explains.

This order from dr. thomas dobbs doesn't come as a surprise to doctors who say they knew it was the likely next step.

"it is hard and we hate to put these things off because a lot of these elective procedures are necessary.

Medically necessary procedures.

Just because their elective does not mean it's not needed.

But anyway, we do know that earlier in the year it worked.

When we did this earlier in the year when dr. dobbs implement a desk, capacity was immediately freed up."

The order applies to elective procedures that require overnight hospitalization.

It's not just an issue of whether there are physical beds available.

Even where there are- there's not enough staff to care for more patients.

"dr. dobbs has been clear to the physicians over the past year but it would likely happen again if things keep going the same direction.

You've got to make capacity.

We can't leave people outside the building.

We've got to find a way to take care of all the sick people and this is a logical next step."

And that domino effect comes into play for ems. pafford has been adjusting it's protocol as they feel the impact of hospitals filling up.

"we've taken some of our older decommission stretchers and we placed them in the hospital.

We move those patients to those cots waiting.

Because again, the hospitals don't have the capacity or the beds to put them in either.

We have to supply the beds for them.

And then that frees that ambulance, that actual cotton ambulance and that crew to be able to respond to an emergency."

But it's been more complex than just assigning staff to the hospitals to wait with patients till they're admitted.

"we're flying people to corpus christi texas, to birmingham alabama, i mean there's no beds.

This is not just a unique situation for the jackson metroplex.

It's all over."

The state department of health is reporting 2,665 new cases today and 56 deaths.

1,164 people are hospitalized with confirmed or suspected covid symptoms. ??

298 of those patients are in i.c.u.

??

In our area, lee county has the most new cases with 78.

??

Union county has 34 , lowndes has 72, pontotoc has 45 , and monroe is reporting 32 .

Cooler temperatures returns for the new workweek with highs in the upper 40s to lower 50s.

There's another chance for some isolated showers on wednesday.

But the pandemic has not stopped one tupelo business owner from opening a mexican cantina.

Wcbi's chad groening has the story.

Cantina del sol has finally opened.

The new restaurant on north gloster across from best buy is the third mexican establishment owned by fidel cabillo.

He really wanted to make this a showplace.

"we were able to plan this one from the ground up.

We were able to plan every aspect of it, every corner and every food item also.

In this restaurant we were trying to bring a little of our culture of our traditionals.

We brought our brick from mexico.

Our stone was brought from mexico.

Some of our tile was brought from mexico.

It's been a very traditional place to do."

2020 has been a rough year for the restaurant business here in northeast mississippi as well as across the country.

But imagine trying to open a new restaurant amidst this pandemic.

And that's exactly what's been done here.

"we planned this restaurant five years ago.

And two years ago we started doing this restaurant.

And then covid hit and it took us a year longer to finish it up and get it rolling."

And cabillo says right they are opened from 4pm to 11pm monday through saturday serving only dinner.

"our plates here our food is a little more complicated and it takes a little time to prepare and it's hard to do it on a lunch rush."

That is why he wants to wait until he thinks it's safe to open the buffet.

"we could train our employees to do the things safe way.

It's hard to explain to every person that walks in the proper procedures of grabbing food, handling food.

It's our obligation to keep everyone safe."

Cabillo hopes he can open the buffet soon, because it is a very big part of his business.

The west point community hosts a christmas at the blues museum festival of the trees parade.

The annual parade will be held inside the museum.

Folks are encouraged to take a tour of christmas trees decorated by organizations, churches, and schools.

This gives participants the opportunity to still take part in the traditional decorating of a float.

Visitors will also pick their favorite decorations from 15 different displays.

" the christmas parade brings a community together during the holidays and seince we weren't able to have that, we got creative.

You can judge on your favorite trees.

And it just brings people downtown and it brings people together for the holidays.

" folks can visit the downtown west point stores on saturday and sunday's from 1 to 4 to judge their favorite trees.

Now...they want to do the same thing with the internet.

For many people...reliable internet access is something they can't live without.

But since the covid-19 pandemic...it's become a necessity.

"there's a lot of education needs, kids need it to be able to do their homework and research and a lot of people need it for healthcare."

But it is something residents in rural parts of clay county have had to go without.

"at first we used to have to go into town and sit in the parking lot and use the internet."

On friday...that changed for roy and mary shannon as they became the first customers to get broadband internet service in their region from fastnet.

Su: when they're done, the shannon's will have close to 200 yards of fiberoptic cable running under their property.

Fastnet is a subsidiary of 4- county electric power association.

The columbus- based utility company has launched a broadband pilot project to provide internet service to customers in the rural areas of northeast choctaw, west clay and north noxubee counties.

"there's been a lot of discussion across the country about the lack of internet service in rural parts of america and people started equating that to the electricity they had in the 1930s."

The shannons say this will be a huge help not just to them...but the entire community.

"we've got friends who are working from home due to the virus and they have real problems with it too."

With $6 million dollars form the mississippi electric cooperatives broadband covid-19 grant program...clark hopes to connect as many households as possible.

"it's really evident that the internet is now a lifeline where it used to be entertainment and luxury.

No year's been more evident than that than with covid."

A birthday drive of the century was hosted today in starkville.??

Miss honey robinson hit the 100 year mark on thursday and to celebrate her family hosted a birthday drive by.

Family and friends showed their gratitude for miss honey by bringing gifts to her.

The family was excited to hold a celebration of life for their loved one despite the pandemic.

The birthday girl had a message for everyone that came out and also got a special gift from mayor spruill.

"i thank everybody" " she's 100 years old she's still in good health, gets up and still moves about so we're really really just blessed; and we wanted the community to come out and just show here some love.

It is declared that today that you join with us the beckham and robinson family in celebrating the life and legacy of jessie anna beckham robinson as the city of starkville recognizes this day december 12, 2020 as miss honey day."

Miss honey says she's thankful to have made it to 100.
