The 48-day annual retreat for captive elephants in Tamil Nadu commenced Monday at the Thekkampatti village near Mettupalayam's Coimbatore district.
In order to participate in the camp both the elephants and the mahouts have to attain negative coronavirus certificates from the authorities.
Samples from the throat and the trunk were taken by the mahouts as doctors can only be spectators in the region.
