As temperatures rise, the frozen lake begins to thaw and the lake water's movement seemingly pushes ice shards along the shore, some colliding with thicker ice sheets.
Scientists also believe that wind may also cause stacking by moving thin ice sheets on the surface of the water.

Due to westerly winds and above-freezing temperatures, ice has been breaking away from Lake Michigan.
