The government announced new rules on February 25 to curb misuse of social media platforms in India.
It mandated firms to appoint grievance officer, disclose the first originator of the mischievous information and remove content depicting nudity of women within 24 hours.
Union Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad announced the new guidelines in a briefing.
As per the new rules, the appointment of a Chief Compliance Officer is mandatory.
Social media intermediaries also have to appoint a grievance officer, who shall register complaints in 24 hours.
Social media platforms on being asked by court or government will be required to disclose the first originator of the mischievous information.
