Action news now reporter dani masten is live in chicoÃyou talked to people about this..
How are they responding to the county using this money to help the homeless?
DebbieÃpeople i spoke to today have mixed feelings about the county wanting to use money to put more homeless into hotel rooms. jade mcdaniel- roe/lives in chico "i think it is great if it helps people get into permanent housing that is a steppingstone for them to become more productive members in our community."
Nicole vail/lives in chico "it just temporarily puts people in housing situations that are not suitable for long-term use."
Opposing opinions when it comes to the county using tax dollars to provide more shelter for the homeless.
Jade mcdaniel- roe/lives in chico "they are able to get people to their medical appointments easier if they can find them because they are housed in the hotels.
Also, the end goal is to get them into permanent housing in the community which means then, they wouldn't need to use those funds for that anymore."
Nicole vail/lives in chico "hotels were not created to be homes.
So that does get people off our streets and parks right now, but it does not give a long- term plan on how we are going to get these people housed permanently."
Dani masten the counties' main goal is to use this money to help project room key get the homeless get off the streets and into some rooms at places like the heritage inn express.
Tami ritter/district 3 supervisor "wanting to make sure we are using our project room key funds in the way that is the most efficient and gets as many people housed as possible."
The county plans to use three million dollars from a general fund for project room key.
That state initiative has been providing non- congregate sheltering in hotel rooms for people experiencing homelessness during the pandemic.
Nicole vail/lives in chico "hopefully it will help them get the mental health care that they need, drug treatment if they need that and better access to their healthcare."
