A BJP worker's 85-year-old mother Shova Majumdar died on the morning of March 29, a month after she sustained injuries following allegedly being beaten up by TMC workers in Nimta area of North 24 Parganas.
Home Minister Amit Shah said Majumdar was "brutally beaten" by TMC goons and her death will "haunt" West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee for long.
TMC on the other hand, while condemning the incident, said the party was not responsible for the death of the 85-year-old.
TMC leader Sougata Roy said during an altercation between BJP worker Gopal Majumdar and a TMC worker, Gopal's mother got agitated and "fell down" during the brawl.
Roy added that the altercation was not the reason behind Majumdar's death as she had existing physical ailments.
West Bengal is under eight-phase polls which will conclude on Apr 29.
