THE SENATE COULD HEAR A BILL IN THE LAST TWO DAYS OF THE SESSION THAT WOULD MAKE PROFESSIONAL LAW ENFORCEMENT TRAINING MANDATORY FOR FUTURE CONSTABLES IF THEY WANT TO HAVE POLICE POWERS
The session that would make professional law enforcement training mandatory for future constables if they want to have police powers supporters of house bill 2-56 say... if the more than 500 constables in the state of kentucky have the same powers of police officers and sheriff's deputies... like making arrests.... they should be trained and certified like those officers.
They say about 10 constables would be trained at state law enforcement training academies each year.
The bill's opponents argue there are too few slots at the training academy to get all the constables trained.
They also say the constables are often the first line of defense for underserved and isolated rural communities and need police powers to stay safe.
