2021 KHSAA Girls' Sweet 16: Quarterfinals

LEXINGTON, Ky (WTVQ) - It all started with 16 teams on Wednesday when the 2021 KHSAA Girls' Sweet 16 tipped.

Three days later, only three teams are left standing.

And c1 3 teams left.

The k-h-s-a-a girls sweet 16 has been a treat all week.

Several absolute classics throughout the week and it all leads to this.

A friday night for the books.

Franklin county taking on anderson county...one of the favorites to win the whole thing.

Last weekend a boys' c1 3 champion was crowned.

Saturday night a girls' team will receive their crown.

Earlier this season, anderson county played franklin county.

The lady bearcats would win by 32.

Since then the lady flyers suffered a shutdown...came together as a team then rattled off 9 straight wins.

Anderson county and franklin county was actually the second game of the day.

I thought the second quarter was when we were ablet to put our wheel down on that game.

I thought defensively, that first half especially, we did a lot of really good things."

Joey thacker "we just dug ourselves a hole the second quarter.

We missed enough free throws and layups early to kind of get a lead in the first quarter and we didn't make em fall and then it snowballed and you know when they bank one in that things are going downhill for ya."

We've played tough competition all year.

We opened the season up at their place first game of the year.

First friday in january.

They had played a couple games.

They're a great basketball team.

Gotta give them a lot of credit.

They have a lot of good players.

They won the class "a" we knew we had to hold them right around 50 points to win the basketball game.

They're averaging 66.

We held them to 51 which got the job done.

So couldn't be more proud of my girls executing what they needed to do.

Both on offense and on defense and playing with that heart and emotion."

Since last year we got sent home.

Our goal was to come and win a state championship because we knew we had a good team.

We thought we had a decent draw.

We had the team that could do some things.
