Former Limestone County school leaders face class action lawsuit
New at four - the former athens and limestone county superintendent s - along with 4 others are now facing a class action lawsuit.
This is on top of the federal charges that accuse the group of stealing student information and using it to pocket millions of dollars in state funding.
Waay 31's alex torres-perez joins us live with a breakdown of the lawsuit.
Alex..
This class action lawsuit was filed this morning.
It will essentally represents every student whose information was stolen to be a part of that school enrollment fraud scheme.
Hundreds of students information including their names, date of birth and social secuirty numbers were taken from private schools in central and south alabama.
The lawsuit says former superintendents trey holladay and tom sisk along with 4 others wrongfully enrolled those students into their virtual program without the student's or their parent's knowledge.
That allowed the group to receive up to 7 thousand dollars in state funding per child!
The attorneys in this case hope the class action lawsuit will give the students the protection they need.
"help these chidlren move forward with regard to their identity and their personal information being out there" at this time -- it's still unclear how many students were impacted.
The lawsuit says they have about 94 people so far.
I reached out to the athens and limestone county school districts in regards to this new lawsuit.
I have not heard back at this time.
