Armed suspect in custody after standoff with police on South Wayne Avenue lasting 4 hours

Just after 10:20 a.m.

Thursday, officers with the Fort Wayne Police Department were called to the 2400 block of South Wayne Avenue, in the Creighton-Home Neighborhood, to serve a search warrant.

A man is in custody tonight after a search warrant turned into a standoff today on the city's southside.

Fox 55's kelsey mannix tells us what brought officers to the scene and why one neighbor says it was unusual to see.

3 terri gill, neighbor: "well it's been really quiet in our neighborhood for like the last 25 years, so this is a little out-of-character for us."terri gill lives on wayne avenue just down the street from the standoff and saw part of it from a distance.terri gill, neighbor: "i was coming home and i couldn't get down my street, so i went through an alley and just kind of watched from there."indiana state police sergeant brian walker says the standoff began this morning.

Brian walker, indiana state police fw pio: "when officers were in the house, they heard a person they believed to be the suspect, sound like he was loading a shotgun, and saying he's not coming out."officers negotiated for hours before the suspect came out of the house with a weapon around two-30 swat teams fired at the suspect and ordered him to crawl toward the street before taking him into custody.sgt.

Brian walker, indiana state police fw pio: "there was no serious injuries here involved, so obviously they did their job and took him into custody without the use of excessive force."walker says the collaboration between fort wayne pd and indiana state police helped resolve the situation safely.sgt.

They did a really fine job here today."in the 30 years that gill has lived on south wayne she's seen her share of crimes.

But she's not too worried about safety after today's events.terri gill, neighbor: "just glad that they got it taken care of right away so i'm able to come home."

Police completed the search warrant and the criminal investigation is still ongoing.

It will be turned over to the allen county prosecutor's office to determine if any charges need
