On Friday, the Chief Minister of Punjab, Captain Amarinder Singh announced the formation of the new Malerkotla district in Punjab.
Malerkotla, with a majority of Muslim population, is carved out from the city of Sangrur.
It is the 23rd district in the state and located about 131 km from Chandigarh.
