Yevgeny Prigozhin: President of Belarus says Wagner Chief is back in Russia |Oneindia News

Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko has revealed that Yevgeny Prigozhin, the chief of the Russian mercenary group known as Wagner, is currently in St.

Petersburg.

Lukashenko, who had helped Russian broker a deal with Prigozhin following an abortive mutiny, has also stated that the Wagner troops still remain stationed at their previous camps.

The rebellion orchestrated by Prigozhin's troops had posed a significant threat to Russian President Vladimir Putin, as they were able to swiftly capture military headquarters in Rostov-on-Don and had aimed to march on Moscow, with the intention of ousting the defense minister and the General Staff chief.

However, Prigozhin had halted the advance of its troops under the agreement facilitated by the Belarusian President.

He was then sent to Belarus under the terms of a deal and mutiny charges against him were dropped.

It was also promised by Russian authorities that those memebers of the Wagner Group who had not participated in the uprising would be given an option to join the Russian army.

It was under Prigozhin’s command that Russian forces were able to put up a good show in Bakhmut, Mariuopol and other theatres of the conflict.

The Wagner Chief had repeatedly accused top echelons of the Russian army of indifference and lying to the Russian President about the real status of the battle with Ukraine.
