If Ukraine’s counteroffensive against Moscow’s invasion captures Russian territory, there would be no alternative to using strategic nuclear weapons, Russia’s Dmitry Medvedev warned on Sunday.
“There would simply be no other way out” of using nuclear weapons if the Ukrainian offensive succeeded in taking Russian territory, Medvedev, former Russian president and current National Security Council deputy chairman, said in a post on social media.
Medvedev, the former Russian President, and current National Security Council deputy chairman, has not been shy about threatening nuclear war before, but this is a direct threat we haven’t seen before.
It is clear Russia sees the territory it occupies in Crimea as Russian and they likely see the areas they control in Southeast Ukraine as Russian.
The counteroffensive has been bogged down since its start however, so is this an empty threat?
