Former U.S. president Donald Trump has pleaded not guilty to criminal charges over his alleged interference in the 2020 U.S. presidential election leading up to the deadly January 6, 2021, Capitol riots.

Federal prosecutors said Trump "was determined to remain in power" after losing the 2020 election to President Joe Biden.

Trump faces a maximum sentence of 20 years if found guilty.
