In 1980 then-president Jimmy Carter agreed to take Cuban refuges if they could get to America, after Fidel Castro opened a window to allow Cubans to leave the island from Mariel Harbor.
Approximately 125,000 Cubans made their way to the US on a flotilla of some 1700 boats during the summer of 1980.
Castro did more than just “allow” Cubans to leave the island.
He released an estimated 25,000 hardened criminals and mental patients from Cuban prisons and mental institutions and sent them to the US along with the regular citizens.
Just as is happening today, the federal government was largely absent from south Florida and left the state to handle the influx mostly on its own.
With the federal governments limited involvement, background investigations and intake interviews were conducted as best as could be done by state and local authorities.
This resulted in the criminal element hidden amongst the other Cuban citizens to be allowed into the country.
As the number of criminals, combined with the rise of cocaine, south Florida, and Miami in particular, saw a rapid and dramatic rise in violent crime that carried through all the way until the late 1990’s and early 2000’s.
Some sectors of south Florida are still dealing with the culture of violence that was imported in the summer of 1980.
While the vast majority of Cubans, both here previously and who came here as a result of what became known as the Mariel boat lift, were simply looking to escape the harsh conditions and violent regime of Castros communist dictatorial rule, others were not.
We are witnessing the same thing happening today along the southern border, except for the fact that this time the government, under Joe Biden, is more than simply incapable or incompetent.
What is happening is intentional, well planned and well organized.
This is the administrations attempt to replace their previous voting block with new voters that are beholden to them.
The loyal democrats that voted for them previously are starting to see through their BS and leave them lacking in support.
Remember, as long as it helps them, they don’t care if it hurts you.
