Hamas’s armed wing said that the commander of its forces in the Tulkarem area of the West Bank was among four members of the group killed during a day-long Israeli raid in the town of Dayr al-Ghusun.
A statement from the Izzaldin al-Qassam Brigades names Alaa Shreiteh, 45, as commander of the al-Qassam Brigades in the Tulkarem governorate.
Shreiteh was jailed by Israel between 2002 and 2016.
According to the IDF, there was a twelve-hour gun battle in the Tulkarem area of the West Bank between its forces and Hamas militants in which four Hamas men were killed.
However, the identity of Alaa Shreiteh was revealed by the al-Qassim brigade early on Sunday.
Hamas confirmed that four of the men killed during the raid in Deir al-Ghusun village were from its al-Qassam armed wing.
The Palestinian health ministry said their bodies had been taken by the Israeli military.
There was no information about the fifth man, whose body was too disfigured for immediate identification, the Palestinian health ministry in the West Bank said.
