Authorities in Russia's Dagestan region have identified several individuals with significant backgrounds among those responsible for Sunday’s deadly attacks on places of worship in Derbent and Makhachkala, resulting in at least 20 fatalities.
The assailants included a former mixed martial arts (MMA) fighter and relatives of a regional official, according to reports from the Russian state news agency, TASS.
Five attackers involved in the violence were identified by law enforcement sources on Monday.
The coordinated attacks targeted multiple places of worship and included a violent confrontation at a police traffic stop in these cities within the Muslim-majority republic.
The tragic events resulted in the deaths of 15 police officers and four civilians, including an Orthodox priest.
