Uranium mining town in Kyrgyzstan battles Soviet-era radioactive waste

With the nuclear disposal work entering its final stages, Min-Kush, a town in central Kyrgyzstan, hopes to move on soon from its radioactive past.

Three decades on from Soviet independence, Kyrgyzstan is still dealing with the consequences of the nuclear arms race in the Cold War, when Central Asia provided the Soviet Union with all of its uranium.

"We have good ideas for turning the village into a tourist base," says Ilgiz Ernis, the town's deputy mayor.
