Horrific stampedes at two Christmas charity events in Nigeria have resulted in the tragic deaths of 32 people, including four children.
The stampedes occurred in Okija, Anambra State, and in Abuja, as desperate crowds scrambled for food amid the country’s worst cost-of-living crisis in decades.
At least 22 people died in Okija during a food distribution event, while 10 people lost their lives in Abuja during a church-organized charity event.
The stampedes highlight the dangers of overcrowded events, with many participants, including the elderly, camping overnight for food and gifts.
