Major incident declared in Greater Manchester after floods

A major incident has been declared in Greater Manchester after severe rainfall on New Year’s Day caused widespread flooding.

Homes have been evacuated, train lines and roads have closed, and a canal has collapsed following heavy rain.

The Met Office says some parts of the North West saw almost a month’s worth of rain within 48 hours.
