Whitesnake and Thin Lizzy guitarist John Sykes dies at 65.
According to a statement on his website, the legendary guitarist passed away after a 'hard fought battle with cancer.'
Sykes' career took off when he joined classic rock band Thin Lizzy as their guitarist in 1982.
He went on to perform with the group throughout their year-long farewell tour and on albums Thunder and Lightning and Life .
After he departed from Thin Lizzy, Sykes joined the rock band Whitesnake, performing on their 1984 album Slide It In and co-writing on their 1987 self-titled album Whitesnake .
Whitesnake founder and bandmate David Coverdale has since shared a statement about Sykes' passing on social media, writing, 'Just heard the shocking news of John's passing...My sincere condolences to his family, friends & fans.'
